MonasteriesIf you're into religious architecture, Portugal is the place for you! We went to three major monasteries and all three were truly magnificent. I was especially impressed by the condition of all of them compared to ones I've visited in other countries. (Perhaps due partly to Portugal's nonparticipation in World War II and also a lack of a major revolutionary war where the symbols of the old monarchy/religious structure were destroyed.) If pressed to pick a favorite, I would say Alcobaça with its elaborately carved royal tombs and the fabulous giant fireplace in the kitchen. (Large enough to fit an entire Rick Steves tour with some room to spare!)

CoimbraLike many old European university towns/cities, Coimbra definitely is a welcoming mix of history and a vibrant, young population. In spite of its windy, narrow streets, it's surprisingly easy to navigate. While cameras were not allowed in the two main tourist attractions we saw (Coimbra University's old building and King John's Library), the city itself is an artwork.
We also attended a fado performance; Coimbra fado is traditionally performed by male university students who write songs about romantic love as well as nostalgia about the end of their university years. As it was the final tour visit of the year, Cristina prepared a special surprise for our performers - before arriving, we all practiced a couple songs and sang along! They were truly surprised to see a group of Americans (try to) sing along in Portuguese. |
